The end of editing again

The editing process is finally over for the fifth time, however due to the constant restarting of the project, i honestly think that i have benefitted from the experince as i feel that the video has progressed with each corrupted render restart. As i have spent so much time working with the same footage, i have become more attached to the video than i thought i would be which has resulted in me trying to make the very best out of that i can rather than just finishing with an acceptable video.

Evaluation format planning

I have decided to anwser my evaluation in the form of podcasts and a video dairy

destruction explanation?

After some research into why my render files were turning into mini suicide bombers, i found something in an old final cut book about Safe RT and Infinite RT modes, before i was Infinite RT which is the less stable of the two, so i have now changed my all my projects to Safe RT and hopefully this will help resolve the issue.

Instrumental infuremental solution

After a lot of mucking about with filters, i decided to go back an watch through all my unused footage and found one take of Ella singing which i had wanted to use originally but couldn't sync it in correctly. Out of a mix of curiosity and boredom i speed up the footage to see if i could create some Ian Curtis Dancing. Once the giggles had ended i decided to drop the speed up take into the instrumental section and found that it suited the crazy riffs and keyboards.

Thank you Joy Division.

Instrumental infuremental

Trying to find footage to match the long instrumental sections of the song is proving a lot harder then i thought, i originally planned to just bring up the opacity of the drawing but the result is just boring and a little bit jarring. Il post again later when i have found a solution...

Boredom of biblical proportions

The syncing is finally all matched up and has only taken the best part of a day, now its time to fix a weird result of the rendering which has caused my opacity meters to go all over the place, which surprise, surprise means MORE RENDERING also I've found myself in a twisted version of musical chairs where i get repeatedly kicked off college computers every few minutes because other groups have decided to save their project across every single computer in the room. sigh...

Thankfully i have been editing on my laptop otherwise the lack of available computers would of probably caused a brain hemorrhage by now.

Layers=long rendering times...

After the torture of 15 hours of upload times, I find I'm once again staring blanking at a loading bar. As i write this I'm currently waiting for a 40 minute render so i can finish fixing the sync on my video. With the amount of layers used in this video what should only be 2.30 minutes of footage is in reality something close to 15 which when matched to the amount of effects in the forms of opacity and speed modifying has resulted in render times which far outstrip my attention span. I just pray that my laptop doesn't decide to kill itself again otherwise I'm going to have to sit through all this for a third time...

Drawing and layering

After layering my 'drawn' footage over the, 'Ella' footage, i've found that even though it looks very interesting the result is just, two diminished texts fighting for attention rather than one whole piece. To resolve this i will have sections of purely one layer of footage rather than two.

The opacity needs to alternate throughout the video, however currently the opacity is set to high and will be lowered to give a cleaner finish, also instead of just having two layers of footage i will layer drawing over drawing and in same places have up to five Ella+Drawn layers on screen at once.
Hopefully this should work in making all the footage come together into one succinct video, if not i need to do some major rethinking...

Editing and Screenshots

With all the recent self destructive files on my laptop, i have decided to make screenshots throughout the editing process, as proof of work. As due to the file corruption my teachers have been unable to view a finished piece. A series of screenshots will be uploaded shortly in their own blog.

Look for one singer and find three

After asking around I've managed to find three people from drama willing to be in my music video. Hannah has a tendency to die her hair every other day so i've decided not to use her incase i need to re-film something last minute and then her hair is suddenly blue! My girl-friend does drama and is also a musician, however a know that if i use her in my media i will end up not getting any work done. So i have decided to use my friend Ella for my media as she is a drama student and also does media, so she understands the workload and how to act around a video shoot also as she has ridiculously long ginger hair she should stand out as a performer.

Picking a Singer

After using my friend Luke for last years media coursework, i've learnt that friends are not always as enthusiastic in-front of a camera than when they first agreed to help. So I have decided that i going to ask around the drama departments to find my lead singer.

The savour that is rehearsing

I just had the dress rehearsal of my music video, despite already running through the video with ella weeks ago. Today she had little to no idea of what sort of movements she had to make and barely knew the words to the song. So after 4 hours of barking orders and teaching someone how to stand... I think i am finally ready to film and after today i am more than relieved that i organised a day to just run through everything.

Impending doom

With my first day of filming in less than a week, panic has begun to kick in to try and resolve any last minute confusions that could otherwise waste a day of filming i have organised with my lead singer to meet up and have a dress rehearsal and to give Ella a basic plan of what i want to film.

A whole lot of planning.

With working by my self I have noticed that planning the actual video itself has progressed faster than i imagined, most likely due to a lack of any conflicting ideas. However i have noticed that as i go onto developing my planning and managing a blog continues i am beginning to fall behind other groups in my class. To resolve this i have set my self very early filming dates due to that fact that i do not have the luxury of being able to rely on other people to help get the work done.

First day of filming

Apart from having to much footage, the filming its self went without mishaps which has left me very relieved after my initial fear of using my College's expensive new HD camera's. However i did encounter a few issues with managing with all the equipment, due to being in a group of only myself rather than 4 people. I planned to film a pan going across the room, during the part of the video where i 'flickered' the two lights, this was impossible as i needed one hand per light controlling the switches leaving me unable to manage the camera. As a result i am going to have to manipulate my footage in final cut pro and edit in pans/zooms that i was unable to otherwise film.

My Kingdom for more tapes!

The first day of filming lasted a lot longer than i predicted and as a result i ended up with five hours of footage and only half of Ella performance filmed, i will have to re-organise another day for filming and remember in the future that you can never have enough tapes!

Lighting

Due to my plans of a near stationary video camera, I will add further variation away from editing via changing the lighting in parts of the video to keep the audience engaged. Instead of keeping a constant fully lit shot I will film different takes with no lighting, 2 spot lights, backlighting, overhead sources 0f light and alternating flickering lights. This allows me to stick to my original plan without my music video becoming monotonous.

Angles

After initial planning i have decided that the whole video will be filmed in one room with a minimum number of angle changes as my current plan of a 'drawn' background, after a few practice simulations clashes with frequent edits, as the change in shot jars to heavily with the drawing, which if left unchanged would simply irritate the audience. So instead i will film the entire video with the same angle with all movement being made by the singer, background and all camera movement will be manipulated in post production.
